Alex Morgan’s Return to the USWNT

The United States Women’s National Team called up star forward Alex Morgan to the 23-woman roster to compete in the the She Believes Cup at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida that kicks off on Feb. 18. Morgan has recovered from COVID-19 after testing positive earlier in the year and has followed the team’s protocol for recovery and return to play. Morgan missed the team’s January camp and friendly matches due to this diagnosis.

Head coach Vlatko Andonovski announced the roster on Monday. It includes powerhouse forwards Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe and Christen Press (Manchester United W.F.C.). The USWNT will take on Canada, Brazil and Argentina in this years She Believes Cup. The team kicked off 2021 with two victories over Colombia (4-0, 6-0).

Morgan, 31, has made a name for herself since the moment she began her professional career with the Western New York Flash in 2011. At age 22, Morgan became the youngest player to join the National Team and she immediately rose to that challenge. 

As a member of the USWNT, she was the first player to score a goal and make an assist in a World Cup final, and she helped lead the team to two consecutive World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019. In 2019, the team won the final game against the Netherlands 2-0 to claim victory in the second consecutive tournament.

Her impact runs far beyond the soccer field, as she is also a businesswoman, social media personality and marketing icon, representing many different brands. Morgan authored the book series “The Kicks”, which focused on empowering young women. 

Morgan is sponsored by brands including Nike, Coca Cola and Secret. Morgan, Christine Sinclair and Steph Catley became the first female soccer players to be featured in a FIFA game with the release of FIFA 16 in 2015. 

Morgan is currently a member of the Orlando Pride, alongside USWNT teammates Ali Krieger, Ashlyn Harris and Sydney Leroux.
