Netflix’s Army of Thieves Releases Teaser Trailer and Key Art

Netflix’s zombie smash hit Army of the Dead has inspired a prequel. Army of Thieves was prepped and shot during the pandemic and is expected to be released in the fall of 2021, although the exact release date has not been announced. The film will star Matthias Schweighöfer, returning from the original film as the skilled safecracker Ludwig Dieter. Schweighöfer will also direct the prequel set-up to Zack Snyder’s developing zombie universe.

The teaser trailer has now been released, along with key art and first-look images.

Playing a small-town bank teller, Schweighöfer’s character is drawn into a wildly exciting and dangerous adventure by a mysterious woman, played by Nathalie Emmanuel. The pair join a misfit team of Interpol’s most wanted criminals to participate in a series of complicated heists involving cracking some of the most impenetrable safes across Europe. Described by Deborah Snyder, another star of the film, as a “romantic comedy heist film”, she calls it a “really sweet, funny film” that is not a stereotypical zombie movie, but takes place in the beginning stages of the zombie outbreak in which zombies have infiltrated America. This creates chaos for banking institutions, providing the perfect opportunity for a heist.

Snyder elaborated on their thought process for Army of Thieves, stating that after the release of Army of the Dead, Dieter was an overwhelming favorite. Audiences wanted more information; where he came from, how he began cracking safes, overall a thorough background story of the beloved character.

The screenplay is written by Shay Hatten, co-writer of Army of the Dead with Joby Harold. Beyond Schweighöfer and Emmanuel, the cast includes Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, and Jonathan Cohen. This will be the fourth movie Schweighöfer has directed after his 2010 directorial debut of the romantic comedy What a Man.
