Even so, Art Basel Miami Beach solidified its position as the premier art fair in the Americas, attracting global attention and featuring diverse artistic expressions by being the main attraction.

THE ART OF HIP-HOP

The Art of Hip Hop, a collaboration between the Museum of Graffiti and StockX, marked its permanent presence in Wynwood during Miami Art Week. Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop, the inaugural exhibition titled “From the Bronx to the Beach” showcased the genre’s visual architects, including photographers like Janet Beckman and Mike Miller, album cover artists such as Lisa Leone, graffiti writers, and designers like Cey Adams. The exhibit, curated by Alan Ket in partnership with StockX, attracted figures like Fat Joe, John Wall, and Trinidad James. The grand opening featured immersive experiences, including an artist lounge by MiCampo, a sneaker customization station by Modelo, and craft cocktails by D’Usse Cognac and Guayaki. Attendees enjoyed perks like Crep Protect’s sneaker cleaning and Champion’s limited edition customization. The night concluded with dynamic performances by DJ Spade and the legendary Fat Joe, who was honored with a hand-painted portrait by Disem signed by Miami’s graffiti community.

ART MIAMI/ CONTEXT ART MIAMI

Art Miami celebrated its 33rd edition, solidifying its status as the premier international contemporary and modern art fair, held alongside the 11th edition of CONTEXT Art Miami from December 5th to 10th. The events reported substantial sales, drawing in esteemed art collectors, connoisseurs, advisors, and museum professionals. The VIP Preview on December 5th, benefiting Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), marked a triumphant start, with Art Miami contributing over $350,000 to support the museum. VIP guests included PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans, Jessica Goldman Srebnick, Steve Wynn, and notable figures like Pierce Brosnan, Will Smith, Shark Tank’s Daymond John, and Kevin O’Leary. With 240 exhibitors from 31 countries showcasing art from 900 artists, the fairs spotlighted diverse creators, addressing topics from human rights to war. Strong sales, including works by Fernando Botero, Roy Lichtenstein, Warhol, and Yayoi Kusama, were reported throughout the week. PNC Private Bank sponsored the fairs, expressing its commitment to the arts. Carole Brown, head of PNC Asset Management Group, highlighted their enthusiasm as the Signature Sponsor. ART BASEL 

Art Basel Miami Beach 2023 concluded as the premier art fair in the Americas, showcasing an extraordinary diversity of artistic expressions. The event featured a redesigned floor plan and 25 new galleries from across the globe, solidifying its status as a cultural hub. The show attracted 79,000 attendees, including leading collectors and institutions. The Conversations program highlighted influential figures like María Magdalena Campos-Pons and Chance the Rapper. Galleries reported robust sales, spanning from 20th-century luminaries to emerging voices. With philanthropic elements, the inaugural Access by Art Basel online platform raised over $100,000 for charitable causes. The fair collaborated with renowned institutions, private collections, and cultural partners, expanding its impact beyond the convention center. Bridget Finn, the newly appointed director, expressed excitement about the indescribable uniqueness of the event. Exhibitors praised the fair’s influential role, with notable sales and positive responses. The Legacy Purchase Program and CPGA-Étant Donnés Prize highlighted Miami Beach’s commitment to fostering artistic legacies.

DESIGN MIAMI

The 19th edition of Design Miami/ unfolded alongside Art Basel Miami Beach from December 6 to 10, 2023, with a Preview Day on December 5, creating a global platform for 20th- and 21st-century design at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Culminating on December 10, the event featured over 50 gallery and Curio presentations, showcasing a diverse array of historic and contemporary collectible designs, more than 20 brand collaborations, and various Special Projects. Responding to the curatorial theme, “Where We Stand,” the fair boasted engaging works from artists like Marta, Southern Guild, and æquō and significant historical designs from renowned galleries. Notably, Design Miami/ CEO Jen Roberts expressed the impact of this edition, emphasizing its resonance following successful events in Basel and Paris earlier in the year. The fair received positive feedback from both established and emerging collectors, with solid sales throughout the week, setting the stage for the 20th anniversary in 2024. Grela Orihuela, SVP of Design Miami/, highlighted the success of the curatorial theme in fostering meaningful conversations and acknowledged Nifemi Marcus-Bello’s winning of the first Curator’s Award for his poignant entrance piece, Omi Iyo, a testament to the storytelling power of design.

UNTITLED ART FAIR

Untitled Art fair’s 12th edition opened with a vibrant celebration during the VIP and Press Preview, marking the beginning of the 2023 Exhibitor Prizes jury selection. The fair attracted a diverse and influential audience, including institutional directors, curators, journalists, celebrities, and collectors from the United States, Latin America, and beyond. The carefully curated Special Projects highlighted emerging voices and the historical narratives shaping contemporary art. Notable showcases included Zielinsky’s presentation of Vera Chaves Barcellos’ “Epidermic Scapes,” Luis Ortiz Monasterio’s “Marea” collection, and bitforms’ exhibition of Manfred Mohr’s early plotter drawings. The fair reported record attendance, with over 55,000 visitors exploring 166 exhibitors from 38 countries, attending panels, and enjoying performances. Noteworthy was the emphasis on gender equality and technological advancements, featuring nearly 60% female/non-binary artists and approximately 37% BIPOC, Latin American, and Asian artists. Untitled Art achieved a milestone by awarding over $150,000 in prizes, promoting cutting-edge artworks, and reinforcing its commitment to pushing artistic boundaries. Reports highlighted a significant achievement in gender equality, with 67% of works sold by women artists on the opening day. The fair’s Special Projects also addressed crucial issues, showcasing voices like Awilda Sterling-Duprey’s “Blindfolded.” Critics from The Wall Street Journal and ARTnews noted that the fair continued to be a dynamic and enjoyable platform, proving that contemporary art appreciation need not be a solemn affair. Overall, Untitled Art’s 12th edition affirmed its position as a pioneering curatorial destination, ushering in a new era and embracing fresh ideas and perspectives.

RED DOT/ SPECTRUM MIAMI 

From December 6 to 10, 2023, Miami Art Week set the stage for the dynamic convergence of Spectrum Miami and Red Dot Miami at Mana Wynwood. Over 1,000 artists and 280 exhibitors transformed 150,000 square feet into a vibrant display of creativity. A standout attraction was a collaborative exhibit featuring the iconic band The B-52s and 16 ape artists from the “Save The Chimps” sanctuary, adding a unique touch to the event. The festivities kicked off on Wednesday, December 6, with a Press Preview, Spotlight Program, and Art Labs, including unveiling the “Save The Chimps” Collection. Throughout the five-day extravaganza, attendees could immerse themselves in interactive experiences like Meet the Artists and Live Demonstrations, fostering a personal connection with the artwork. Red Dot Miami, celebrating its 18th year alongside Spectrum Miami, offered a curated selection of 65+ galleries and 500+ contemporary artists, making art accessible and affordable. Key daily events included the Spotlight Program, Art Lab: Discoveries Collection, and Live Demonstrations, creating a dynamic and engaging atmosphere for art enthusiasts and industry insiders.

SUKEBAN

Amidst the frenzy of Miami Art Week’s opulent displays and celebrity-laden parties, Sukeban, an all-female Japanese wrestling league, offered a refreshing departure from the norm. Over 2,000 spectators gathered at Lot 11 Skatepark in Downtown Miami for a night that defied the melodramatic machismo of traditional wrestling. Sukeban’s wrestlers, akin to drag performers, embraced over-the-top personas like Bingo, “the resident evil clown,” Commander Nakajima, and Countess Saori, adorned in lavish costumes designed by Olympia Le-Tan and Stephen Jones. The term “Sukeban” harks back to the 1960s, when rebellious Japanese girls challenged societal norms. The event transcended athleticism, blending fashion, anime, and storytelling. Reflecting a spirit of rebellion, wrestler Ichigo Sayaka emphasized the importance of continuing Sukeban’s legacy and forging a new world. Commander Nakajima emerged victorious as the first Sukeban World Champion, receiving a Marc Newson–designed leather belt adorned with artist Ayako Ishiguro’s vivid depictions, embodying the mesmerizing and menacing energy that defined the night.

PINTA ART

In the historic Hangar, once the base of Pan American Airlines, Pinta Miami transcends traditional art fairs, offering a distinctive blend of nature, avant-garde, and Latin American art in the heart of Miami. Curated by Irene Gelfman, the visionary force behind Pinta Art, the 17th-anniversary edition, Pinta 2023, introduces a transformative concept at The Hangar in Coconut Grove. This year, the fair showcases the rich diversity of Latin American and Spanish creators through Solo-Duo Projects, NEXT, and the Main Section. Pinta’s commitment to promoting Ibero-American modern and contemporary art is palpable, underscored by curated sections and a digital Media Point featuring engaging audiovisual content. RCA ARCADE

RCA Records, a powerhouse representing renowned artists like Khalid, Doja Cat, and Miguel, orchestrated a captivating event at Wynwood during Miami Art Week in collaboration with Sony Electronics, named the RCAade. This exclusive showcase marked the debut of RCA’s merchandise collection and featured mesmerizing DJ sets by Channel Tres and Barbra Doza. The event also showcased original paintings by the multitalented Doja Cat, adding a vibrant artistic dimension to the experience. Recognizing the significance of partnerships, RCA Records expressed gratitude to collaborators Sony Electronics and Southbound Tequila. The convergence of music, art, and merchandise underscored RCA’s commitment to creating immersive experiences for fans and fostering creativity within the industry, making the RCAade a standout event during Miami Art Week.

DION LEE X EMCEE STUDIOS

Dion Lee made a stylish mark in the vibrant landscape of Miami during Miami Art Week, hosted at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Collaborating with Emcee Studios, the December 9th event showcased the fashion house’s cutting-edge designs in the heart of the city’s design district. The event featured a captivating musical performance by Kelela, accompanied by DJ sets from Mister Vacation and Crystallmess. Against the backdrop of the Institute of Contemporary Art, attendees embraced the Dion Lee aesthetic, donning utility-core ensembles characterized by dark colors and silver accents. The convergence of art and fashion created a dynamic atmosphere, seamlessly blending the innovative spirit of Dion Lee with the cultural richness of Miami’s creative scene. The event seamlessly blended the lines of fashion and art, as the two coincided for the perfect visual chaos.

NEW BIRKENSTOCK STORE IN MIAMI DESIGN DISTRICT

BIRKENSTOCK Americas is set to unveil its fifth company-owned retail store in the United States on December 8th, situated in the vibrant Miami Design District on 40th Street. This move reflects BIRKENSTOCK’s commitment to its expanding Miami customer base. The store will showcase an extensive product range for women, men, and kids, featuring sandals, clogs, sneakers, shoes, boots, and socks. The Miami location boasts a unique design, seamlessly blending modern Miami aesthetics with a lush natural oasis. Held at the Bentley Residences showroom, the event exuded Miami’s renowned glamorous decadence against a beachfront backdrop. Attendees, including notable figures like Real Housewives of Miami’s Kiki Barth and New England Patriots’ Davon Godchaux, immersed themselves in Givenchy’s latest collection and explored the opulent model unit of Bentley Residences, the world’s first Bentley Motors-branded tower. AT THE CUSP OF MIDNIGHT AND COLOR

From December 5-10, 2023, the vibrant atmosphere of SCOPE Art 2023 in Miami will be further enriched by the return of contemporary abstract artist Melissa Herrington and her Los Angeles-based gallery, M HERRINGTON GALLERY. Showcasing a captivating collection of new works by national and international artists, Herrington unveils eight abstract paintings as part of her series, “At the Cusp of Midnight and Color.” These pieces transcend traditional boundaries, skillfully melding mediums, forms, and concepts. THE RITZ CARLTON SOUTH BEACH – MY HOME

From December 5 to 10, 2023, The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach, located at 1 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, Florida, commemorates its 20th anniversary by hosting Morris Lapidus My Home. This exhibition showcases the artistic legacy of renowned architect Morris Lapidus, a key figure in Miami’s architectural history. The hotel, originally opened as the DiLido Hotel in 1953, is a masterpiece of Lapidus’ iconic MiMo style. Celebrating the dual milestones of the hotel and Lapidus’ transformative influence on Miami Beach’s cityscape, the exhibition coincides with Art Basel|Miami Beach, Miami Art Week, and Design Miami 2023. A unique collaboration with The Bass allows The Ritz-Carlton to display art objects and furniture from Lapidus’ collection for the first time. THE RITZ CARLTON BAL HARBOR – OUR LEGACY

From December 5, 2023, to early 2024, The Ritz-Carlton, Bal Harbour, located at 10295 Collins Ave, Bal Harbour, FL 33154, will host “Our Legacy,” an exhibition by Israeli-born artist Ronen Azulay. This profound showcase delves into Azulay’s family history, illustrating the resilience of love in overcoming tribal boundaries. The artworks, intricate mosaics meticulously crafted from recycled fabrics and leather scraps donated by Azulay’s community, reveal the concealed North African heritage shaped by the artist’s self-discovery. Ronen’s exploration of his lineage exposes an evolving world marked by escalating intra-Jewish tensions. As he questions the concealment of roots, the exhibition prompts reflection on our responsibility in shaping the legacy for future generations. Azulay, residing and working in New York City, draws on his early career as a men’s fashion designer, disrupting the mass production cycle through repurposed denim, leather, and textiles. His technical prowess and transformative approach create a new artistic vocabulary, challenging the norms of manufacturing and consumption in a thought-provoking manner.
