Netflix Acquires Rights to Remake “Fast & Loose” Starring Will Smith

Netflix has recently bagged the rights to action-thriller Fast & Loose from STXfilms, set to star Will Smith. According to Deadline, Netflix acquired the rights to a remake after a major bidding war involving Warner Bros, Paramount, MGM, and Sony after the project hit the market in February of this year.

Fast & Loose follows the journey of a man who wakes up in Tijuana with no memories of how he got there or who he is. As he pieces together his past, he discovers he has been leading a double life; a major crime kingpin and an undercover CIA agent—but which is his true identity?

Will Smith will be directed by David Leitch, who has been connected with Fast & Loose since the spring of 2020 when production company 87North picked up the script written by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber, known for RED, My Spy, and Battleship. The movie will also be produced under Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios label.

David Leitch’s involvement should provide plenty of excitement going into its release. Stunt double-turned-director, Leitch is behind Atomic Blonde, John Wick, Deadpool 2, and Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw. His most recent work, Bullet Train, features Brad Pitt, Michael Shannon, Lady Gaga, and Sandra Bullock in which five assassins aboard a high-speed train discover that their missions have something in common.

Will Smith has also been in full swing as an action hero. His last film, Bad Boys For Life, was a huge box office hit. Until Fast & Loose gets moving, he is set to star in King Richard, where he will play the father of tennis champions, Serena and Venus Williams. Additionally, he will star and produce a remake of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles alongside Kevin Hart, as well as a new thriller called Emancipation that centers around a runaway slave.

With these projects in the works, there is plenty to be excited about coming from both David Leitch and Will Smith, and Fast & Loose is sure to surpass all expectations.
