Netflix to Produce GameStop Stock Market Film

PC: Variety

At the end of January, the stock market faced a wave of Reddit-users buying mass amounts of stock. The main stocks bought were from GameStop, AMC, Nokia and other cheap stocks. Netflix supposedly already has a film based on these events in the works just over a week later.

Deadline broke the news on Feb. 1 with unnamed sources inside Netflix revealing what is allegedly in the works. Mark Boal, who wrote “Zero Dark Thirty,” is negotiating to write the screenplay for the film. Noah Centineo, who recently co-starred in the “To All the Boys” series, is playing a major role in the movie. Deadline’s sources did not tie a director to the film, but said that Makeready founder and CEO Brad Weston will produce the film alongside Nick Styne of Definition Entertainment.

Netflix denied to formally comment to Deadline. However, their sources claim that the film will “shine a light on the phenomenon” that led regular Americans to wipe out hedge funds worth billions of dollars. Some other events that the film may focus on include the insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6, the 2020 presidential election and the rise of right-wing social media platforms such as Parler, which both Apple and Google have removed from their app stores.

The aftereffects of this incident are unknown. This could lead to the project taking longer to produce as more information comes out and the situation changes. While there are other projects beginning to form, Netflix’s high production speed will likely prevent similar projects from pulling through with much success. Another factor that plays into the situation is Boal’s quick writing, which was noted for “Zero Dark Thirty” when it was the first film to be made about the killing of Osama Bin Laden by Seal Team Six in 2011.
