The Golden Globes Announces Winners, Takes A New Approach To The Awards Show This Year

The Golden Globe Awards, since 1944, had its first awards show, informal ceremony, and no physical award. Fast forward 78 years, the award show looks quite different.

This year, the 2022 Golden Globes did not require nominees to attend. Instead they ensured a limited audience and was not televised. Avid fans of the awards show relied on social media to find out who won. Here are some of the most notable winners:

  • Best Motion Picture – Drama: “The Power of the Dog
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama: Will Smith in “King Richard”
  • Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy: “West Side Story”
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy: Rachel Zegler in “West Side Story”
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy: Andrew Garfield in “Tick, Tick… Boom!”
  • Best Picture – Animated: “Encanto”
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama: Nicole Kidman in “Being the Ricardos”

The COVID-19 pandemic took a toll on several award shows, forcing some to take a different approach. For the Golden Globes, not only did the pandemic influence the awards show, but the scandal surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) had a big effect. Last year, current and former members of HFPA accused the organization of corruption because they did not have any Black members.

Since the accusations, the Golden Globes became a private event, with few in attendance, and remained untelevised. The HFPA has also invited 21 new members to join the organization, six of whom are Black.

While this progress is good for HFPA, it is unlikely the Golden Globes will be as pristine.
