The Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week began on Monday July 4th and ended on Thursday July 7th. Prominent people from the fashion world made their way to Paris to see the newest couture looks. High end fashion brands such as Chanel, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and plenty more displayed their stunning pieces to the public. These new looks were a part of brands’ Fall and Winter 2022 and 2023 collections. Couture gives creative directors the opportunity to display their boldest ideas. In addition, design teams prove their abilities and skillsets through couture. A couture collection is also about building a brand and is often the most unmitigated expression of the values of a brand. Although couture clothing is out of reach for the majority of consumers, it is a celebration of fashion that consumers and creators collectively partake in. Here are some highlights from the Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week 2022.

The label Jean-Paul Gaultier allows a new designer to build their couture collection each year now that Jean-Paul Gaultier himself has stepped back from designing. This year, Jean-Paul Gaultier chose Olivier Roustening as their featured designer. Rousteing produced an array of designs that honored the archive of Gaultier. Mid-way through the show, the surprise occurred when two models wearing dresses with protruding belly bumps, metal jewelry, and nose rings strode down the runway. Rousteing was highlighting France’s decision to extend the right to access IVF to lesbian couples and single women last year. Overall, Rousteing created a masterpiece of a collection that sent many important messages.

Balenciaga asked celebrities Dua Lipa, Nicole Kidman, Kim Kardashian, and Naomi Campbell to model their looks on the runway. These stars gave their best catwalks in modern pieces that were created by Demna Gvasalia. Balenciaga took many risks with their collection, such as using the tough material aluminum and creating a “speaker bag” that actually includes a sound system. Some looks were well received; Kim Kardashian dazzled in a classic fitted black dress. In addition, Dua Lipa looked gorgeous in a one shoulder yellow dress. However, other looks were torn apart; many people likened Naomi Campbell’s look to a trash bag. Furthermore, others likened Nicole Kidman’s look to tin foil. Nevertheless, Balenciaga created a great mix of refreshing and timeless looks for their collection.

Schiaparelli Focussed on Florals

In Daniel Roseberry’s latest couture collection for Schiaparelli, Roseberry displayed floral details in most looks. Roseberry incorporated the floral detailing in many different ways; florals were hand-painted, made with leather, or created with stones and metal leaves. The flower theme was intricate and stunning; Roseberry used autumnal tones such as dark orange and other colors such as bright blues. The floral theme was refreshing and delicate in comparison to the house’s classic metallic embellishments. Overall, the floral theme was gorgeous and a nice return to Roseberry’s past inspiration.
