2022 BET Awards: Hits and Misses

2022 BET Awards: Hits and Misses

On Sunday, the BET Awards were held in Los Angeles. The Black Entertainment Television network hosts the BET Awards. Their purpose is to celebrate African Americans in music, acting, sports and other fields of entertainment each year. Many stars attended the 2022 BET Awards; guests included Lizzo, Janelle Monáe, Diddy, Taraji P. Henson, Mary J. Blige, Chance the Rapper, and more. The stars brought the drama with their outfits, whether it worked or not. Overall, here are some of the hits and misses of the night.

Hit: Lizzo

Lizzo’s Gucci frock is stunning to say the least. The feathers, sparkles, navy color, and ruched waist all work to create a classic and sensational look. The thigh slit and plunging neckline add some edginess to the dress. She paired the dress with platform heels and diamond earrings. Overall, Lizzo always shines on the red carpet and this look did just that.

Miss: Billy Porter

While Billy Porter’s willingness to take risks with his fashion is commendable, it sometimes fails him. Sadly, this was one of those times. Porter chose a two-piece slate gray outfit by Rick Owens. This outfit consisted of a long sweater with a form fitting floor length skirt. In Billy Porter fashion, the sweater had strange shoulder protrusions to add some drama. While the outfit is bizarre enough, the shoes take it to another level. Porter wore avant-garde gray suede Rick Owens ankle boots with gray toe plates. Billy Porter is a risk taker with his fashion, but this goes to show that taking a risk doesn’t always work out.

Hit: Janelle Monáe

Janelle Monáe turned heads with her whimsical sheer chiffon Roberto Cavalli gown. The black leather harness with the huge black rose at the center makes this gown one of a kind. In addition, Monáe kept her accessories simple with small dangly earrings and let the dress speak for itself. There was a lot of thought behind this outfit choice; Monáe worked with her stylist to send a message with her dress following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The creative director of Roberto Cavalli, Fausto Puglisi, created a bold cage effect with the harness. Furthermore, this harness emphasized ideas of protection and empowerment. Janelle Monáe’s look was glamorous, captivating, and symbolic.

Miss: Saucy Satana

Saucy Santana chose to wear a chic fitted yellow and green plaid blazer dress by Area. His blazer dress is adorable, but his footwear choice is questionable. Satana opted for knee high green and yellow feathered boots. The yellow and the green in the boots clashes with the yellow and green in the blazer. His blazer dress is quite stylish, it’s just a bummer he decided to wear such ugly footwear.

Hit: Taraji P. Henson

Taraji P. Henson stole the show with this sparking silver dress by Tom Ford. First, the dress highlights her figure beautifully. The color and style of the dress are timeless. In addition, the chain neckline adds a level of sophistication to this classic look. This is the kind of look that will never go out of style. Furthermore, she made the right decision to accessorize minimally with diamond earrings.

Miss: Kanye West

There are no words needed to explain that this outfit is a miss. West wore a leather jacket by Hood By Air with a ripped black tee underneath. In addition, West sported a pair of black trousers, snow boots, and blue and black gloves. This outfit went south with the full face black mask, sunglasses, and hat. People on Twitter were scared West would suffer from “asphyxiation and heat stroke” with all of his layers.

Hit: Cynthia Erivo

This two piece from Louis Vuitton is giving golden hour vibes, and we are here for it. The colors are striking to say the least, and the structure of the top is extremely modern and cool. The billowing of the fabric at the neck adds an interesting texture. In addition, the leather belt with holes in it adds some refreshing spunk. Her golden platform heels add to the sunset theme of her outfit. Overall, this look is fresh, creative, stylish, and fun.

Miss: Summer Walker

Summer Walker wore a custom golden two piece by Laurel Street. Her look included gold pasties, gold harness top, and a mini skit made out of gold coin and chain. There is no problem with revealing skin, but it looks as though much of what Walker is wearing doesn’t fit her correctly. Consequently, Walker’s outfit choices led people on Twitter to believe that Walker doesn’t have a fashion stylist.

Hit: Marsai Martin

This may be my favorite look of the night. Everything about this look is perfection. First, the Dolce and Gabbana dress catches your eye with its fringe detail and Swarovski crystals. The length and fit of the dress is so flattering on Martin. The neckline and straps fit her flawlessly; no gaps but no constriction. Her sliver platform heels nicely compliment the theme of the dress. Martin didn’t use any heavy accessories because the dress itself was enough. This dress will always be a showstopper; it’s timeless and beautifully made.

Miss: Sean “Diddy” Combs

Wearing this vibrant color is a risk, and I like that Diddy was willing to take this risk. However, it’s clear now that hot pink should not be a part of his daily color wearing. His loafers were definitely the best part of the outfit because of how chic and versatile they are. The suit doesn’t;t fit him in a flattering way and the asymmetry of the jacket is hard to look at. Overall, Diddy’s suit didn’t do him justice.
