‘Framing Britney Spears’

The New York Times released a documentary on pop sensation Britney Spears titled ‘Framing Britney Spears.’ It is currently streaming on Hulu and FX. The documentary details Spears’ struggles and the #FreeBritney movement.

The #FreeBritney movement advocates for Britney to be freed from her conservatorship, with her father being the conservator. A conservatorship is where a guardian is appointed by a judge to manage finances for someone. This happens because the person is deemed unfit to do it themselves. This conservatorship was ordered by the courts due to Spears’ mental health. Those advocating to free her believe she is being manipulated by her father, and is sending subtle messages online asking for help. They cite examples like Spears wearing a certain color on Tik Tok after people commented telling her to wear that color if she needs help.

The conservatorship was issued in 2008 as a result of her public breakdown. Her meltdown was followed and publicized heavily. For this season her image was damaged. Spears rose to fame in the late 1990s with songs like “…Baby One More Time” and “Oops I Did It Again.”  Spears has been denied control of her finances for 13 years.

For the documentary The New York times interviewed a variety of sources involved in Spears’ life.

“‘Framing Britney Spears’ captures what the public might not know about the nature of Spears’s conservatorship and her court battle with her father over who should control her estate” said The New York Times on Instagram.

The documentary is an hour long episode featured on “The New York Times Presents.” It is the sixth episode of the series.
